Content Area Literacy

Bringing Content Area Texts into the Reading Block
Content area literacy is the ability to use reading strategies to acquire information in content area topics. With a successful content area program, teachers can both show students the value of real-life reading and improve studentsí abilities to comprehend and think critically about content area texts. Mondo offers three programs to help build content area literacy skills. iExplore (Grades 1-5) combines engaging print and online resources designed for use in whole and small group instruction, and for individual reading. Reading Safari (Grades K-5) builds vocabulary and comprehension skills with paired fiction and nonfiction texts in a single topic area at the same guided reading level. InfoPairs: Paired Nonfiction Articles for Cross-Text Reading (Grades 1-5) develops studentsí abilities to apply a range of comprehension strategies to science and social studies texts. The leveled, paired nonfiction text cards are designed for explicit small group guided reading instruction with an emphasis on critical analysis and synthesizing across science and social studies texts.
