Two lesson booklets accompanies each photo in the chart-an Oral Language~Reading lesson and an Oral Language~Writing
lessonThe lessons follow a standard instructional sequence:

Oral Language~Reading
  1. Students generate thoughts and share ideas.
  2. Teacher records students’ thoughts.
  3. Students and teacher read their thoughts.
  4. Together they create a “library” based on students’ own ideas, thoughts, and experiences.
  5. Students interpret ideas of authors through the text cards.

Oral Language~Writing

Builds on the language work established through the use of the Oral Language~Reading instructional strategy
  1. Students generate thoughts and share ideas.
  2. Students record thoughts either as a group or individually.
  3. Students revisit the written text, making sure it makes sense, says what they meant and can be read by others.
  4. Students publish the text.
This sequence reinforces the students’ understanding that their thoughts can be talked about, written about, and read about, thereby developing and reinforcing oral language and print concept development.
